Perito Moreno Glacier is a massive glacier located in Los Glaciares National Park in the Santa Cruz Province of Argentina. It is one of the most famous glaciers in the world and is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The glacier spans over 250 square kilometers and is part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, which is the third-largest reserve of fresh water in the world. What sets Perito Moreno Glacier apart from other glaciers is its unique formation and constantly changing shape. It is what is known as an advancing glacier, meaning it is constantly moving forward and growing. As the glacier moves, it grinds against the rock and creates a dam that blocks a section of the lake. The water pressure behind the dam eventually causes it to rupture, resulting in an incredible natural phenomenon known as a glacier calving. Visitors can witness this incredible sight from a boardwalk located just a few hundred meters from the glacier. The boardwalk offers stunning views of the glacier as well as the surrounding mountains and lakes. There are also boat tours available that take visitors up close to the glacier and offer a unique perspective of its size and beauty. Overall, Perito Moreno Glacier is a natural wonder that is definitely worth a visit for anyone traveling to Patagonia.
