The Red Squirrel, scientifically known as Tamiasciurus hudsonicus, is a small tree squirrel native to North America, including Alberta, Canada. These squirrels are known for their reddish fur, white underbellies, and bushy tails. They are smaller than the more commonly known gray squirrels, typically measuring about 28 to 35 centimeters in length, including their tail. In Alberta, Red Squirrels are commonly found in coniferous and mixed forests, where they play a crucial role in the ecosystem by aiding in seed dispersal. They are particularly associated with pine, spruce, and fir trees, as they rely heavily on the seeds from these trees for food. Red Squirrels are known for their energetic and territorial behavior, often defending their territory aggressively from other squirrels. These squirrels are active year-round, although they may spend more time in their nests during harsh winter weather. They are known for their vocalizations, which include a variety of chirps and chatters used to communicate with other squirrels and to warn of potential dangers. Red Squirrels are also known for their habit of caching food, storing seeds and nuts in various locations to ensure a food supply during the winter months. In terms of reproduction, Red Squirrels typically have one or two litters per year, with each litter consisting of three to seven young. The young are born blind and helpless, but they develop quickly and are weaned by about eight weeks of age. Overall, the Red Squirrel is an important and vibrant part of Alberta's wildlife, contributing to the health and diversity of forest ecosystems.
