The wild horses of the Camargue, located in the Rhône River delta in southern France, are one of the most iconic and ancient horse breeds in the world. Known for their distinctive white or gray coats, these horses are believed to have roamed the wetlands of the Camargue region for thousands of years. They are well-adapted to the harsh conditions of the marshy environment, including saltwater, strong winds, and a variety of temperatures. The Camargue horses are relatively small, sturdy, and resilient, with a height typically ranging from 13 to 14 hands. They have a strong build, with a broad chest and powerful legs, making them well-suited for navigating the challenging terrain of their natural habitat. Their diet mainly consists of the rough grasses and vegetation found in the marshes. These horses play a significant role in the culture and traditions of the Camargue region. They are often associated with the local cowboys, known as "gardians," who use them to manage the semi-wild cattle herds. The horses are also a central feature in various festivals and events, showcasing their beauty and agility. The Camargue region itself is a unique and biodiverse area, known for its rich wildlife, including flamingos, bulls, and a variety of bird species. The presence of the wild horses adds to the region's allure, attracting tourists and nature enthusiasts from around the world who come to witness these majestic animals in their natural setting.
