Tower Bridge is one of London's most iconic landmarks, known for its distinctive Victorian Gothic architecture and its location spanning the River Thames. Completed in 1894, the bridge was designed by architect Sir Horace Jones and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry to ease road traffic while maintaining river access to the Pool of London docks. The bridge features two massive towers connected by two horizontal walkways, which were originally designed to allow pedestrians to cross when the bridge was raised for passing ships. The central span of the bridge is split into two bascules, or leaves, which can be raised to allow river traffic to pass through. This bascule mechanism was originally powered by steam but has since been modernized with electricity. Tower Bridge is often mistakenly referred to as London Bridge, which is actually a different bridge located upstream. The bridge's striking design includes elements of both suspension and bascule bridge engineering, making it a unique structure. Today, Tower Bridge serves as both a functional roadway and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the Tower Bridge Exhibition, which includes access to the high-level walkways and offers panoramic views of London. The exhibition also provides insights into the bridge's history and engineering through interactive displays and historical artifacts. Tower Bridge's location near the Tower of London adds to its historical significance, and it remains a symbol of London's rich architectural and cultural heritage.
