Ayutthaya is a historical city in central Thailand, located about 80 kilometers north of Bangkok. It was the capital of the Ayutthaya Kingdom from the 14th to the 18th century and was one of the wealthiest and most prosperous cities in Southeast Asia at that time. The city was founded in 1350 and quickly became a major trading hub, connecting Southeast Asia and China with India and the Middle East. Its strategic location on the Chao Phraya River and its wealth attracted the attention of European powers, such as the Dutch and the Portuguese, who established trading posts in Ayutthaya. Ayutthaya reached its peak in the 17th century, with a population of over one million people and a flourishing culture that blended Indian, Chinese, and Khmer influences. The city was known for its impressive temples, palaces, and monuments, including the Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the Viharn Phra Monkol Bophit, and the Ayutthaya Historical Park, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, Ayutthaya was also frequently attacked by neighboring kingdoms, such as Burma and Vietnam, and suffered several devastating invasions and sackings. The final blow came in 1767, when the city was completely destroyed by the Burmese army. Today, Ayutthaya is a popular tourist destination and an important historical site in Thailand. Visitors can explore the ruins of the ancient city, admire the impressive architecture and artistry of the temples and palaces, and learn about the rich cultural heritage of the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
