The Broad-tailed Hummingbird is a species commonly found in the mountainous regions of the western United States, including New Mexico. These birds are known for their iridescent green backs and rose-colored throats, particularly in males. Females and juveniles are generally less colorful, with more muted tones and white-tipped tail feathers. In New Mexico, Broad-tailed Hummingbirds are typically seen during their breeding season, which runs from late spring to early fall. They prefer habitats such as open woodlands, meadows, and areas with abundant flowering plants, which provide the nectar they feed on. These hummingbirds are also known to visit feeders, making them a popular sight in gardens and backyards. The Broad-tailed Hummingbird is adapted to high-altitude environments, often found at elevations ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 feet. They have a unique ability to enter a state of torpor, a temporary hibernation-like condition, to conserve energy during cold nights or when food is scarce. Their distinctive wing trill, produced by the males during flight, is a common sound in their habitats and is used to attract females and establish territory. Conservation-wise, the Broad-tailed Hummingbird is not currently considered threatened, but like many bird species, it faces challenges from habitat loss and climate change.
