The island was formed from a volcanic eruption around 3,600 years ago, which created its unique caldera and rugged cliffs. Both towns offer a mix of traditional Greek architecture, narrow winding streets, and a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. Santorini is also known for its unique beaches, which feature volcanic sand in colors ranging from black to red. Popular beaches include Perissa, Kamari, and the Red Beach. The island's volcanic soil contributes to its distinctive wine production, with local varieties such as Assyrtiko being highly regarded. In addition to its natural beauty and cultural attractions, Santorini offers a range of activities for visitors, including hiking, sailing, and exploring archaeological sites like Akrotiri, an ancient Minoan settlement preserved by volcanic ash.
