The Shimanek Covered Bridge spans Thomas Creek in the Willamette Valley of western Oregon, a few miles east of the small town of Scio. Although it is sometimes credited to Lane County, it actually stands in neighboring Linn County, which keeps one of the largest collections of historic covered bridges in the western United States. Painted a bold barn red with white trim and lined with louvered windows, it is one of the most recognizable and photographed bridges in the region. The present structure dates from 1966, making it among the younger covered bridges in the state, but it continues a long tradition at the crossing. Several earlier bridges have occupied the site since the late nineteenth century, each replaced as floods, weather, and age took their toll. The current span uses a sturdy timber truss design and still carries road traffic, so it remains a working part of the rural road network rather than simply a relic. The surroundings are quiet farmland, with pastures, woodlots, and the clear, rocky flow of Thomas Creek beneath the bridge. Visitors often include it on driving tours of the Scio-area covered bridges, enjoying the drum of tires on wooden planks and the cool, shaded interior that frames views of the creek through its openings. In autumn, when the valley foliage turns, the red bridge stands out vividly against the landscape.
