North Sister and Middle Sister are two prominent volcanic peaks located in the Cascade Range of Oregon. They are part of a trio known as the Three Sisters, with South Sister being the third peak. These peaks are situated within the Three Sisters Wilderness, a protected area known for its stunning natural beauty and diverse ecosystems. North Sister, also known as "Faith," is the oldest and most rugged of the three. It stands at an elevation of about 10,085 feet (3,074 meters) and is characterized by its steep, rocky terrain. Unlike its younger siblings, North Sister is considered a "dead" volcano, meaning it has not erupted in a long time and is not expected to erupt again. The peak is known for its challenging climbing routes, attracting experienced mountaineers. Middle Sister, or "Hope," is slightly younger and less eroded than North Sister. It reaches an elevation of approximately 10,047 feet (3,062 meters). Middle Sister is also considered an extinct volcano. The peak offers a variety of climbing and hiking opportunities, with routes that are generally less technical than those on North Sister. The area around Middle Sister features glacial landscapes and alpine meadows, making it a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Both peaks are part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, which includes many other notable volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest. The region is known for its volcanic activity, though the Three Sisters themselves have not erupted in recent history. The surrounding wilderness area provides habitat for a variety of wildlife and is a popular spot for hiking, backpacking, and mountaineering. Visitors to the area can enjoy breathtaking views, pristine lakes, and diverse flora and fauna.
