West and East Mitten Buttes are iconic geological formations located in Monument Valley, which straddles the Arizona-Utah border. These buttes are part of the Colorado Plateau and are renowned for their striking appearance and cultural significance. The Mitten Buttes are named for their resemblance to a pair of mittens, with each butte featuring a prominent "thumb" that extends outward. West Mitten Butte is situated to the west of East Mitten Butte, and together they create a picturesque landscape that is often associated with the American Southwest. These formations are composed primarily of sandstone and have been shaped over millions of years by erosion. The buttes rise dramatically from the valley floor, with West Mitten Butte reaching an elevation of about 6,176 feet (1,882 meters) and East Mitten Butte slightly higher at approximately 6,226 feet (1,898 meters). Monument Valley, including the Mitten Buttes, holds significant cultural importance for the Navajo Nation, which manages the area as part of the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. The valley has been featured in numerous films, photographs, and artworks, contributing to its status as a symbol of the American West. Visitors to Monument Valley can explore the area through guided tours, which often include stops at the Mitten Buttes. The landscape offers stunning views, particularly during sunrise and sunset, when the light casts dramatic shadows and highlights the vibrant colors of the rock formations.
