Island Lake is a stunning alpine lake located in the San Juan National Forest in southwestern Colorado. It is known for its vibrant turquoise waters, which are a result of glacial silt suspended in the water. The lake is situated at an elevation of approximately 12,400 feet and is surrounded by rugged mountain peaks, offering breathtaking views and a serene wilderness experience. The hike to Island Lake is a popular activity for outdoor enthusiasts and is often accessed via the Ice Lakes Trailhead, located near the town of Silverton. The trail is considered moderately challenging, with a round-trip distance of about 7 to 8 miles, depending on the specific route taken. Hikers can expect a significant elevation gain, but the effort is rewarded with spectacular scenery, including wildflower-filled meadows, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic vistas. Island Lake is part of the larger Ice Lakes Basin area, which also includes the nearby Ice Lake, another picturesque alpine lake. The area is a favorite among photographers, nature lovers, and those seeking a peaceful escape into nature. Due to its high elevation, the best time to visit Island Lake is typically from late June to early October, when the snow has melted and the trails are more accessible. Visitors should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, as well as the potential for altitude sickness due to the high elevation. It's important to bring adequate water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for the hike. Camping is allowed in the area, but visitors should practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the natural beauty of the environment.
