The Four-masted Barque Passat is a historic sailing ship located in Lübeck, Germany. Built in 1911 by Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Passat is one of the famous "Flying P-Liners" operated by the German shipping company F. Laeisz. These ships were renowned for their speed and reliability in transporting goods, particularly nitrate from Chile to Europe. Passat is a steel-hulled windjammer, featuring four masts and a barque rig, which means that the foremast and mainmast are square-rigged, while the mizzenmast is fore-and-aft rigged. The ship measures approximately 115 meters in length and was designed for long voyages, often braving the challenging conditions around Cape Horn. After its commercial career ended, Passat was retired from active service and eventually preserved as a museum ship. Today, it is moored in Travemünde, a borough of Lübeck, where it serves as a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the ship to learn about its history and the life of sailors during the age of wind-powered commercial shipping. Passat also functions as a youth hostel and venue for various events, helping to maintain its legacy as an important piece of maritime heritage.
