The Kicking Horse River is a prominent waterway located in the Canadian Rockies of southeastern British Columbia, within Yoho National Park. It is renowned for its striking turquoise color, which is a result of glacial silt suspended in the water. The river originates from the Wapta Lake on the Wapta Icefield and flows through the park, eventually joining the Columbia River. Wapta Falls is one of the most impressive features along the Kicking Horse River. It is the largest waterfall on the river, with a drop of approximately 30 meters (98 feet) and a width of about 150 meters (492 feet). The falls are accessible via a short hiking trail, which offers visitors a chance to experience the powerful rush of water and the surrounding natural beauty. Yoho National Park, where both the Kicking Horse River and Wapta Falls are located, is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is known for its stunning landscapes, including rugged mountains, expansive forests, and pristine lakes. It offers a variety of recreational activities such as hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. The Kicking Horse River is also popular for white-water rafting, attracting adventure enthusiasts looking to navigate its challenging rapids. The river's name is said to have originated from an incident in 1858 when James Hector, a member of the Palliser Expedition, was kicked by his horse while exploring the area. Overall, the Kicking Horse River, Wapta Falls, and Yoho National Park offer visitors a chance to experience some of Canada's most breathtaking natural scenery and outdoor adventures.
