Scaleber Force is a waterfall on Stockdale Beck, just outside the small market town of Settle in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in North Yorkshire, England. The beck tumbles roughly twelve metres over a series of limestone steps into a deep, wooded gorge before continuing down toward the River Ribble. It lies close to the narrow road that climbs from Settle toward Kirkby Malham, which makes it a popular short detour for walkers and visitors exploring the surrounding limestone country. Reaching the foot of the falls means picking a way down a steep, often slippery path into the ravine, where moss-covered rocks, ferns and overhanging trees create a cool, enclosed atmosphere quite different from the open fells above. The water fans out across ledges of dark rock into a plunge pool, and after heavy rain the fall becomes a roaring torrent, while in drier spells it thins to delicate white ribbons. The waterfall sits in classic Craven limestone scenery shaped by the Craven Faults, with nearby landmarks such as Attermire Scar and the caves and crags of the Settle area adding to the interest. Its name reflects the area's Norse heritage, as 'force' derives from the Old Norse word for waterfall. Though modest in size compared with some Dales falls, Scaleber Force has long been admired for its secluded, picturesque setting.
